EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN THE ARTS

The Ministry of Culture is responsible for tertiary education and training in the arts and for courses provided by the Royal School of Library and Information Science.

All studies coming under the heading of education and training in the arts are tertiary and conducted at State or self-regulating institutes and colleges within the fields of architecture, design, the visual arts, conservation, music, film, theatre and dance. Courses are conducted over a period of four to six years.

The objective is to train professional performers and creative artists to a high level of excellence.

In contrast to most other third level studies, admission to education and training in the arts is usually subject to a successful audition. Traditionally, there has been far more applicants than available places and, in recent years, heightened interest among the young has been evident in courses that can pave the way for a career as an actor, musician or film director.

Most of the institutes and schools are financed 100% by the State, but the acting schools in Aarhus and Odense are financed by a Ministry of Culture subsidy in the amount of 75% of budgeted running costs, provided that the relevant county councils fund the remaining 25%.

INSTITUTIONS
The largest schools are the schools of architecture, the Royal School of Library and Information Science and the schools of designs, which together account for two-thirds of all students. The six music academies account for roughly one-quarter, while the remainder of students is distributed among film, theatre, the visual arts, and arts and crafts studies.

Detailed information on the management structure and courses provided by the various institutes is available from individual colleges listed below.

The three education councils were established in 1999 by the Ministry of Culture. The councils provide general advisory services to the ministry with respect to administering its institutes of higher learning. These are: The Education Council for Architecture, Design, Visual Arts and Conservation; the Education Council for Film and Theatre; and the Education Council for Academies of Music.
